Walk through any homeware department and you'll see the words porcelain, ceramic, fine china, bone china, and stoneware used almost interchangeably — sometimes on the same shelf, sometimes on the same box. They are not the same thing. The differences are physical, measurable, and worth real money, so it's worth five minutes to get them straight.
We make porcelain in Jingdezhen, so yes, we have a horse in this race. But everything below is checkable — including two tests you can run with your own hands in any store.
First, the family tree
Ceramic is the umbrella term: objects made from inorganic, non-metallic materials and transformed by heat. Everything on this list is a ceramic. A label that says only "ceramic" is broad rather than necessarily misleading, so the useful next questions are body type, firing, glaze and intended use.
Within ceramics, what separates the categories is mostly two things: what's in the clay and how hot it's fired. Those two variables control almost everything you care about — strength, weight, porosity, translucency, and how the piece ages over years of use.
Earthenware: fired low, stays porous
Earthenware is fired at roughly 1,000–1,100°C. At that temperature the clay body never fully fuses, so it stays porous — typically absorbing 5–10% of its weight in water through any unglazed surface or any chip in the glaze. It's why old earthenware mugs develop stained crack-lines (crazing) and why a chipped one can start to smell. Earthenware is thick, heavy, opaque, and inexpensive to produce. Most colorful mass-market "ceramic" dinnerware lives here.
Stoneware: the sturdy middle
Stoneware is fired hotter — around 1,200°C — which partially vitrifies the body. Water absorption drops to 1–3%, strength goes up, and you get the dense, rustic, hand-thrown look popular in farmhouse and café styles. Stoneware is honest, durable, everyday material; a lot of respected American studio potteries work in it. Its trade-offs: it's heavy, always opaque, and its chip edges show dark clay underneath.
Porcelain: fired to transformation
Porcelain is a specific recipe — kaolin clay plus porcelain stone — fired at 1,300°C or higher. Something categorical happens at that temperature: the body fully vitrifies, fusing into a glass-like, non-porous material. Water absorption falls below 0.5%. The fired body is white all the way through, strong enough to be made thin, and — the signature — translucent. Hold true porcelain up to the light and the light comes through.
This recipe was perfected in Jingdezhen roughly a thousand years before Europe managed to reproduce it, which is why the material is called china in the first place. The engineering consequence matters more than the history: because porcelain is so strong per millimeter, a porcelain plate can be lighter and more durable than a stoneware plate half again its thickness. Thinness in porcelain isn't fragility — it's the visible evidence of strength.
Bone china: the English variation
Bone china was developed in England around the 1790s, when potters (Josiah Spode gets most of the credit) added calcined bone ash — up to about 50% — to the porcelain recipe. The result is very white, very translucent, and slightly warmer in tone, fired somewhat lower than hard-paste porcelain. It's a beautiful material with a great tradition, especially from Stoke-on-Trent.
Honest comparison: bone china is marginally more translucent; hard-paste porcelain is generally harder-surfaced and takes high-temperature glazes whose colors sit in the glaze rather than on top of it. Neither is "better" — they're different traditions. What you should never pay bone-china prices for is the phrase "fine china," which has no technical definition at all. It's a marketing term. Check the material, not the adjective.
The two tests (do these in the store)
The light test. Hold the piece up to a bright window or lamp with your hand behind it. True porcelain and bone china glow — you'll see the shadow of your fingers through the body. Stoneware and earthenware are opaque. No glow, no porcelain, whatever the box says.
The ring test. Balance the plate or bowl lightly on your fingertips and tap the rim gently with a fingernail. Many sound porcelain pieces produce a clear note, while cracks can interrupt it. Shape, thickness and decoration also affect the sound, so treat this as a clue rather than a laboratory test.
Ten seconds, no equipment, and no label can fake the result.
What this means at the checkout
- If you want inexpensive, colorful, replace-it-when-it-chips dishes: earthenware is fine. Know what you're buying.
- If you want rustic weight and don't mind opacity and heft: good stoneware is a solid choice.
- If you want dishes that can be light in the hand, low in water absorption and visually refined: porcelain is worth considering. Always check the individual product's material, care guidance and intended use rather than relying on a category name alone.
One material earned the name china. Once you've done the light test, you'll understand why.
