Product Safety & Food Contact
Porcelain that goes on the table should be as safe as it is beautiful. This page sets out what our pieces are made of, how they may be used and the standards we test against.
Material
Our tableware and teaware are porcelain made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China: a dense, vitrified ceramic body fired at high temperature, with a glass-like glaze fused to its surface. The product page for each piece states its material, dimensions and care guidance.
Food contact
Glazes and decoration used on surfaces intended for food and drink are selected for food contact. We are arranging independent laboratory testing for lead and cadmium release against the following standards, and will publish the results here as reports are issued:
- United States: U.S. FDA guidance for lead and cadmium in ceramic foodware; California Proposition 65.
- European Union: Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and Council Directive 84/500/EEC on ceramic articles in contact with food.
- United Kingdom: the retained equivalents of the above.

Decorative pieces
Vases, ginger jars and other display pieces are made for decoration and flowers. Unless the product page says otherwise, please do not use them to store or serve food.
Safe use
- Follow the care note on each product page. Pieces with gold or metallic decoration must not go in the microwave.
- Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as moving a piece straight from the fridge to boiling water.
- Stop using any food or drink vessel that is chipped, cracked or crazed until it has been assessed.
- Porcelain can break into sharp pieces. Keep broken items away from children and handle with care.
