Care Guide

Begin with the care note for the individual piece. A plain glazed bowl and a vessel with metallic or overglaze decoration do not ask for the same routine.

Wash gently

When hand-washing is recommended, use lukewarm water, a soft cloth and a small amount of mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads and prolonged soaking around applied decoration.

Avoid sudden temperature changes

Do not move porcelain directly between very cold and very hot conditions. Let the piece approach room temperature before adding hot liquid or placing it on a sharply colder surface.

Lift with support

Handles, spouts, knobs and applied decoration are more vulnerable than the body. Support the weight of a vessel with one hand while steadying it with the other.

Stack thoughtfully

If pieces must be stacked, keep stacks low and place a soft non-abrasive layer between them.

Pause when damage appears

If a food or drink vessel develops a chip, sharp edge or crack, stop using it for food until it has been assessed. Avoid household repair kits on a valued object; a ceramics conservator can advise on appropriate treatment.
